"Can Your Dog Sit" Challenge



Here’s a fun challenge for these long winter days to keep you and your dog occupied. It’s also a tool for uncovering potential training opportunities. Ask your dog to sit while in a weird position or while moving. You can use either a hand signal or a verbal cue. And don’t forget to reward them for success!


Weird Position Challenge (1 point each)

1. Can your dog sit if you are … sitting in a chair?

2. Can your dog sit if you are … lying on the ground?

3. Can your dog sit if …. your back is toward the dog?

4. Can your dog sit if you are ….standing behind the dog?

5. Can your dog sit if you are …. standing on a stool?

6. Can your dog sit if you are ….touching your toes?

7. Can your dog sit if you are …. clapping your hands ?

8. Can your dog sit if you are ….looking out the window?

9. Can your dog sit if you are …. looking at your phone?

10. Can your dog sit if you are …. preparing their dinner?


Moving Challenge (1 point each)

For this challenge, you can ask your dog to sit while you are moving, or you can wait until the dog is sitting (easier).

1. Can you dog sit if you are…running in place?

2. Can your dog sit if you are …..doing jumping jacks?

3. Can your dog sit if you are ….walking with your dog next to you?

4. Can your dog sit if you are ….patting your head and rubbing your belly?

5. Can your dog sit if you are … rolling on the ground?

6. Can your dog sit if you are …. skipping?


Combined Challenge (2 points each)

Try combing one from each category – for instance – Can you dog sit if you are running in place while looking at your phone?


You can also try this with asking your dog to lie down!
